Nicki’s Guide to combating uneven skin texture
What causes uneven skin texture?
I believe that uneven skin texture is commonly a result of excess dead skin cells that build up on the surface of the skin. This can make areas of the skin feel rough or bumpy to the touch and can also give the skin a dull appearance. As for how it happens, there are a number of factors.
In addition to dead skin cell buildup, I am a firm believer in chronic sun exposure playing a big role in uneven skin texture and pore-size irregularity. Natural ageing of the skin will make the skin look duller. Factors such as smoking also contribute, and other skin conditions such as eczema and dry skin can severely affect skin tone and texture.
Here is my guide to the ways you can get a more even skin surface at home
If skin cell buildup is the issue, remedying the situation could be as simple as sloughing those dead cells away. Exfoliation is natural process that helps rejuvenate skin by removing any loose or dead skin cells from the surface, thus revealing healthy skin below. Make sure you are exfoliating once a week with a dedicated scrub or chemical exfoliant, and target the areas that feel uneven. This being said, it's worth noting that using scrubs that are too abrasive — or scrubbing too often — can cause oil overproduction and micro-tears in your skin, which will only exacerbate your skin issues.
I swear by the iS Clinical Tri Active Enzyme Exfoliant (available in our clinic). This is suitable for all skin types, effective yet gentle.
Try a skin peel — it will accelerate skin cell turn over, ridding your skin of congestion and reducing textural irregularities. A chemical peel will also help remove sun-damaged skin, stimulate regrowth and evens out the texture and pigment of skin while promoting collagen production.
Apply an oil to the problem area. I have tried and tested that oil-based products are ideal for regulating sebum production in skin, making it supple, yet balanced and ultra-smooth. Rough, blackhead-speckled noses also experience less buildup with a facial oil.
Vitamin C — Adding vitamin C to your skincare routine will help improve skin texture by providing a powerful antioxidant to repair and defend the skin from environmental damage and restore suppleness while reducing pigmentation, scar tissue, and age spots. I promise, this is key if you want to avoid more texture problems down the line.
Wear SPF, always! I wear SPF always and can not stress enough that it is one of, if not THE most important skincare products when it comes to your skin’s texture and youth. Wearing sun protection reduces the amount of redness and unevenness in skin as well as helps prevent wrinkles and keeps skin supple for longer. Add this to the endless list of reasons why protecting your skin from the sun should always be your first priority.
